Over several years I have read many expert books and watched several documentaries about the Dead Sea Scrolls. Everyone one of them ties all the caves and scrolls to the Qumram community, as if they wrote all the scrolls, knew about each and every cave and hid each and every scroll. In many cases I have wondered if the expert had ever experienced life. If they even considered how long it took to find each cave, why assume the short lived Qumram community had the time and ability to find all those caves. The experts make far too many assumptions and credit the Qumram community with far too much.
Those same experts say that 95% of the scrolls were written by persons outside Qumram and many of the scrolls date before the Qumram community took over the settlement.
Simple destructive reasoning can achieve a great deal. The first thing that must be done is to remove all preconceived ideas that the Qumram community did all the work, then consider the distance of the caves one from the other. Also to be considered is the vast number of differences in the scrolls. Close the debate about who wrote them, the Essenes, or Sadducees, or any other group. Also drop the assumption that only the Essenes occupied the area as ones who hid scrolls.
So what does that leave us?
Since every bit of speculation from the experts is based on their ideas and interpretions and not on fact I will do likewise.
1) We already know that at the time of Judas Maccubees there were several Jewish religious factions and several were fighting for control of oversize of the Temple. So one or more groups is outstead and they settle at Qumram. They have a few Biblical manuscripts and they write their own books. They also come across some Jewish lliterature and keep it. During this time ones come and go. The group finds a few caves and they use for storage. Soon the group dies out or is absorbed back into the Jewish mainstream. As other groups are accepted and rejected they too find this place and likewise leave their deposits.
2) It is also very likely that some Jewish priest believed the Christians and Jesus when warned about the Romans coming the first time in 666CE. The Greek Scriptures are clear that some of the priest accepted Jesus as the massiah. So logically they may have convinced family to leave Jerusalem when the Roman armies withdrew in 66. Since the Jews did not want to mix with gentiles they would have gone to known hiding places. Qumram being a well known place some logically would have gone there and found different caves in which to hide scrolls. They may have even used caves that had scrolls already in place thinking others hid their own. Fact is many of the scrolls can't be attributed to the Essenes so why force it, logically some were hidden from the Romans in 66 CE.
3) Still yet, what of the non-biblical scrolls with Biblical overtones? Ezra has basically set the canon of the Hebrew Scriptures about 160 years earlier. Now the Maccubees have their fight with the Greeks and later the Jews with the Romans. So here you are, an unknown Jew sitting at a table wanting your 15 minutes. Ah write a book with Biblical overtones and apply prophecy to the Greeks or Romans, place it in the cave with Daniel and Isaiah and maybe it will get added to the canon. To assume that there were no Jews with personal aspirations for fame is to ignore the Greek Scriptures. It is likely some of the scrolls are simply a man of his day leaving his mark. Today wedo it with YouTube, or some form of Social Media, well writing a religious book was the Social Media of that time. Make it good enough and maybe, but in the end it was God who set the final canon. But experts debate all those other scrolls.
4) It could also be that some scrolls were religious startups that failed.
In the end the Essenes wrote only about 5% and they may not have known of the existence of the other scrolls or caves. The others were likely deposited by Jews on the run from Romans, some scrolls may simply have been one priest trying to understand the Law in his own manner.
Australian Royal Commission into INSTITUTIONAL Responses to Child Abuse
First to state what the Australian Royal Commission was NOT.
This was NOT an investigation into Jehovah’s Witnesses and it did not start out with any involvement of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Please be fully aware every bit of information I share is from the OFFICAL Royal Commission report.
The Royal Commission was established in 2013 in response to the growing number of child abuse cases from within the Catholic Church.
(To compare recently in the United States the Federal Government got involved with the case of sex abuse of the Catholic Church. If the American Government were to expend its investigation to involve every institution that deals with children it would take in thousands of organizations including Jehovah’s Witnesses but it would not mean that it was an investigation targeting Jehovah’s Witnesses. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/pennsylvania-clergy-sex-abuse-catholic-church-federal-subpoenas-department-of-justice-2018-10-18/ )
After the Royal Commission was established in 2013 they opted to include every organization and institution throughout all of Australia that has contact with children. This means each and every religion, all government organizations that have contact with children, the YMCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Boys Schools, Girl Schools, Public Schools, Orphanages, any and all and it included thousands of organizations. The reality was that AFTER an investigation started into the Catholic Church the Royal Commission was created to “look” at how other organizations handled reports of child abuse. Jehovah’s Witnesses WERE NOT under investigation, like all the other thousands of organizations they were questioned about procedure. Sure Jackson was not handled with kid gloves but no one else was.
The different organizations and institutions were then broken down into groups, at the top of the all the groups was the total of all abused children. Then as each category was created the abused children were placed into each top category, the categories were broken down further and further. Soon you had just a single RELIGIOUS category that took in EVERY religion together as a group. That means the abused children in this group came from ALL different religions. The total of abused children from ALL religious groups was 4,029 (from the Royal Commission report www.childabuseroyalcommission.gov.au )
Quoting from the report:
“The largest number of these survivors spoke to us about child sexual abuse in Catholic Institutions. We heard from 2,489 survivors about child sexual abuse in Catholic institutions, representing almost two-thirds (61.8%) of survivors who told us about child sexual abuse in RELIGIOUS institutions.”
So now the factual truth, the numbers as they apply to Jehovah’s Witnesses.
First these figures are from 1950-2017 so 67 years. Remember the TOTAL number of child abuse cases in ALL religious institutions was 4,029, this was the TOTAL from ALL and most of those occurred within the Catholic Church. So from 1950-2017 how many cases occurred among ones referring to themselves as Jehovah’s Witnesses….70. A total of 70 cases. Here is how those broke down. 44 were abused by an adult (family member) 12 were abused by another child then after all the numbers were considered there were 5 survivors left, of these 5 - 13.8% of that last 5 were abused by someone within the congregation and of that last physical number of 5 – 9.2% were abused by a person in authority. 5 physical survivors over 67 years at 9.2% that is less than 1 person.
I am not trying to be cold, I myself am a survivor of child sexual abuse, but opponents of Jehovah’s Witnesses are intentionally twisting this data and it is causing lies to spread about the purpose and scope of the Royal Commission. It is worthy to note that the Royal Commission pointed out that Jehovah’s Witnesses were corporative and willingly and without warrants shard information and documents that were requested by the Royal Commission. In the Royal Commissions own report they bring out how corporative Jehovah’s Witnesses were. The Royal Commission also pointed out that they made suggestions to Jehovah’s Witnesses some of which were taken and applied.
