Watchtower Library Online vs Watchtower Library DVD

7/31/2018

Before you email me and say “Oh you can use the Watchtower Online Library” they are adding older content.
Yep I know, but the Online Library had 2 major limitations that simply make using the Watchtower Library DVD much better.
1) You can highlight an article or paragraph and copy and paste it into the JW App Study Bible, BUT....you can’t do it with “Copy with Caption”. So guess what? You have to manual type in the reference, that means the entire string of information for every note you copy. If you do not copy the reference you can’t state where the reference is when asked.
2) The Online Library REQUIRES that you be connected to the Internet. It is a fact that nearly 3-4 BILLION people do not have regular access or ANY access to the Internet. So although the Watchtower Library Online is an awesome tool it is limited.
The Watchtower Library on DVD is without limits, you can even have the updates installed off line.

Moving Notes in JW App from Windows to Android

7/31/2018

I use a Windows 10 based tablet and due to the upcoming move to Windows DaaS I have to use an Android Tablet. Will I loose my notes, highlights and other stuff in the JW App?

NO!
YEAH!
But how?

Okay when I read the announcement that was one of my first concerns. So I tested it and guess what, it’s super easy to import them over. Here is how.

On the last day of use of your Windows 10 tablet do the following...

1) Open JW App (On the Windows 10 tablet)
2) Tap the “GEM”
3) Tap the cloud in upper right with the up & down arrows.
4) Tap “Create Backup” (take note of where you saved the backup.
5) Either A) Connect the Android tablet to your Windows 10 table via USB cable or B) use a USB drive, stick it in the Windows 10 tablet.
6) Copy and transfer the Backup file to the Android device or USB drive. If you used a USB drive stick that into the Android tablet after the transfer is complete.
7) Take note of where you placed the backup of the JW App on the Android tablet, maybe put it in the “Download” folder.
8) Ensure the JW App is installed and ALL publications downloaded including the Study Bible. You can download the videos later. But for the restore to work at least the publications have to be downloaded.
9) From the Android tablet open the JW App
10) Tap the “GEM”
11) Tap the cloud with the up & down arrows
12) Tap “Restore”
13) Navigate to where you saved the Backup tap it
14) Confirm the restore option.
15) You’re done.

Remember if you made any notes in the JW App on the Android tablet the restore will delete those notes in favor of the restore. You can only choose one. So if you start to use an Android tablet and then later copy your notes from Windows 10, you will loose one in favor of the other.

Watchtower Library & Windows DaaS

The future change from Windows 10 to Windows Daas and the use of Watchtower Library and JW App.

Okay fellow Watchtower Library and JW App users, like me when you read the announcement of Microsoft making the change from Windows 10 to Windows DaaS for personal home use and you looked at your Windows 10 based tablet and felt, well anger. As I have mentioned in this blog before all members of my family use Windows 10 Tablets. They are great for offline use of the Watchtower Library and the JW App. You can research in the Watchtower Library, highlight, choose “copy with caption” and past the note directly into the JW App Study Bible WITH the reference, it’s way awesome. But all that is about to change.

First let’s cover what will happen.
Microsoft is going to make the change, we have to accept it. If you want to continue to use a Windows 10 based tablet you will have to submit to paying the monthly fee. If you choose to pay the monthly fee, then the only other issues is will the device work without an active Internet connection? Most of us carry our tablets in Service and most of the time have no Internet connection. Reportable Windows DaaS will work like Office 360, offline with checking the Internet when it can. Let’s hope.

Reality is fact that most of us simply can’t afford the monthly fee, then in the EU there is the concern of GDPR. So what will happen? If you do not pay the monthly fee your device will NOT work. You WILL NOT be able to “just use this or that”. Without paying the monthly fee to use the Operating System you simply CAN’T use anything that runs on the Operating System. The monthly fee is the key to unlock the ability to use your device. So you can’t use it for ANYTHING.
You do realize you bought and paid for the device that you can no longer use!
Sadly no monthly fee, no Windows 10 based tablet and no Watchtower Library or JW App.

So what to do?
I will share what we are doing.
1) I canceled my Office 360 account and OneDrive account, I can’t support a company that is going is such a direction. I am moving all my OneDrive content to my GoogleDrive.
2) Get on eBay and find a solid, powerful laptop running Windows 7 with the recovery OS Disc. You will need the Windows 7 system to install the Watchtower Library on.
3) Buy an Android or Apple Tablet and start learning.

That’s the only options. My son and I were talking about hacking the W10 registry and stopping the future update, but he suggested that Microsoft may have considered that and already installed a “kill command or switch”. I think that is likely.

If you purchase a Windows 7 laptop use this as a checklist.
1) If it is an OEM system make 100% sure you have the physical reinstall disc for the OS.
2) If not then find a “RETAIL” copy that has never been installed. Be careful buying OS’s on eBay it is littered with fakes.
3) Hardware, get a laptop with some power. As the day approaches finding systems that run Windows 7 will get harder and cost more.
4) After January 2020 use extreme caution when connecting the Windows 7 system to the Internet. Of course you will need to get Watchtower Library updates, but avoid surfing the Internet. Without security updates you become a target.

Microsoft Makes Move to Windows DaaS

7/31/2018

Here we go again...
Microsoft has announced that with the end of support in January 2020 of Windows 7 they will end the desktop/tablet version of Windows 10 and sometime in late 2019 have a push update to start all devices to update to Windows DaaS. WDaaS is the new Operating System, it will require an always Internet connection and Microsoft will manage your devices. The standalone version of Windows is dead. The new Windows DaaS will be a monthly fee based Operating System, projected cost is said to be $14.99 per device. In our home we currently have 3 Windows 10 devices, that will equal $44.97 + tax per month. We are a poverty level family so we can’t afford to pay $44.97 + tax per month. Now suppose I wanted to add Office 360 to the mix, then I add $7.99 to my monthly fee + tax on that. That comes to $22,98 + tax for 1 device. We also have 3 Windows 7 devices that are NOT connected to the Internet so they can’t update.
Microsoft states the change is necessary due to the fact that so many people are still using Widows 7 and refuse to upgrade, this refusal is hurting Microsoft development and computer companies and hardware manufactures.
OPTIONS MAN I WANT OPTIONS!
Well we have several.
1) Stay with Microsoft and pay $14.99 per month for something you BOUGHT, you paid hundreds for the device, tablet or computer, and now you have to pay for the right to use it.
2) If your device will support it revert back to Windows 7, of course you have to find a legal retail unused copy of Windows 7, and then face the fact that starting in 1-2020 it will no longer be supported and after that it’s use the Internet at your own risk. As I mentioned we have 3 Windows 7 computers but none are connected to the Internet.
3) Linux, install Linux on any devices that will support it. Linux is now a very user friendly option and many Windows users will not notice a difference in day to day use. Also Linux can run many Microsoft based applications.
4) Apple
5) Pen and paper

Microsoft has opened a huge door to a major increase in the use of Android, Linux and Apple. I believe many Microsoft users will move to Linux and Apple, the average American household simply can’t afford the monthly fee I also wonder if the forced change violates the GDPR of Europe? The GDPR covers a vast area of tech and it is possible that a cloud based, monthly fee based, controlled by Microsoft Operating System may violate GDPR. If the move is a violation of GDPR then Microsoft can’t market Windows DaaS in the EU and people in the EU can’t be forced to update. How many billions of personal devices is that?
